PMs Gillard, Key sit down with 2015 World Cup LOC

MELBOURNE, Australia (CMC) – Australia’s Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her New Zealand counterpart John Key met with the 2015 Cricket World Cup Local Organising Committee last Saturday, as the buildup to cricket’s most prestigious tournament continued. Australia and New Zealand host the tournament which will feature 14 nations, including 1975 and 1979 champions West Indies.
LOC chairman James Strong reiterated that the support of both Gillard and Key would be crucial in ensuring the successful staging of the tournament.
“Today represents a significant milestone for the ICC Cricket World Cup local organising committee,” Strong said.
“I welcome the support of Prime Minister Gillard and Prime Minister Key and look forward to working with both governments to deliver a successful global marquee sporting event.”
Strong emphasised the importance of the World Cup to both countries, pointing out that while it was a sporting event, there would be a huge economic spin-off.
“Apart from showcasing the best of international cricket, the ICC 2015 Cricket World Cup provides an enormous opportunity to promote both countries as world-class destinations for business, trade and tourism,” he said.
“The event has a potential viewing audience of 953 million people, with some 800 million of those in Asia alone.
“More importantly, the local organising committee wants to make this event the most fan-friendly event of its kind and will take cricket to a wide-range of communities throughout Australia and New Zealand.”
There is no schedule as yet for the tournament and the location of the final is yet to be determined.
During the meeting, Gillard and Key were presented with a specially produced CWC2015 bat signed by Australia captain Michael Clarke and New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor.
