Two huge trees fall in Georgetown

HEAVY winds in Georgetown caused two huge trees to fall on consecutive days, disrupting traffic in the capital. The second, a Flamboyant, fell early yesterday morning across the road at Manget Place and Brickdam, during consistent rainfall, blocking sections of both thoroughfares after it disintegrated into several pieces.
Employees of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) did the clean-up while regular vehicular movement was cordoned off by Brickdam Police Station.
The downed tree, which stood in front of Ministry of Home Affairs, snapped electric power lines, resulting in a power outage in the area after the current was disconnected by Guyana Power & Light (GPL) employees.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the incident also cut telephone service at Brickdam Station, including the 911 emergency number and Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) personnel were working to restore it.
On Sunday, one of the huge trees on Vlissengen Road, broke into pieces and scattered across the junction with Regent Road. That affected, to some extent, vehicles moving along the former street.
There were no reports of human casualties following the two incidents involving trees that were part of the history of the ‘Garden City’
