Rain hampers LABA/Trophy Stall tourney

THE Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA)-organised, Trophy Stall-sponsored Regulation Seed League tournament opener was interrupted when the rain put paid to the opening match in the second quarter with Retrieve Raiders leading Block 22 Flames 32-13. Prior to the rain interruption, Parliamentary Secretary within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steve Ninvalle told those gathered at the Mackenzie Sports Club, that the governing body was in capable hands, despite seemingly starting on the wrong footing with a few clubs absent.
“You don’t end on the wrong footing even if you started the march past with not many teams being here and it was a little late.”
However, Ninvalle, speaking in the presence of members of the LABA Executive which included the president Captain Eon Murray, applauded the efforts of the Association and suggested they create an inter-block tournament.
“See how much you can do to form or create an Inter-block tournament, because it has done very well at the football level and when people play for the communities you actually find that they play with a little more fire and enthusiasm in them,” stated Ninvalle.
In fact the LABA did stage an inter-block tournament between August and September on 2009 where Central Mackenzie came out as winners, but none was played in the mining community since then.
Ninvalle challenged LABA to have female basketball players at the competitive level, saying, “It is a male-dominated sport in Guyana … as things are changing. You should look and see how much can be done to bring females into the sport. If we see that Linden can have female basketball teams once again, Berbice will want to do likewise and so too will Georgetown.”
According to Ninvalle the LABA is in good hands as “Captain Murray is a captain in name and nature and one who leads from the front and basketball in Linden is in good hands with this new executive that we got.”
The Trophy Stall League championship continued yesterday with the rescheduling of Friday’s matches, along with the conclusion of the Block 22 Flames versus Retrieve Raiders clash which bounces off at 18:30hrs, followed by the second fixture between Victory Valley Royals and GTS Bulls at 20:30hrs.
