Man City appeal Kompany red card

MANCHESTER City have appealed against the red card given to Vincent Kompany in Sunday’s 3-2 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United. The City captain was sent off by Chris Foy on 12 minutes after sliding in with two feet to tackle United winger Nani.
City protested that Kompany took the ball cleanly and was in no danger of injuring Nani, who stayed on his feet and did not protest.
The red card was Kompany’s second of the season and he will be banned for four matches if the appeal fails.
Earlier yesterday, Wayne Rooney hit back at Roberto Mancini after the City manager accused him of influencing Foy.
The Manchester United striker reacted angrily to Kompany’s lunge on Nani at the Etihad Stadium, signalling the challenge was made with both feet.
Mancini said: “It was not a red card. Rooney told (Foy) his decision. This type of tackle happened with Rio Ferdinand and other United defenders many times.”
But Rooney responded on Twitter: “Funny how people think I got Kompany sent off. I’m not ref. I didn’t give red card. But it was a clear red card. Two-footed tackle.”
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson backed his striker.
Speaking at the Balon d’Or awards, the 70-year-old said: “I have no concerns about Wayne’s conduct. To my mind it was a reckless challenge and Nani is a lucky boy not to have picked up a serious injury.
“I don’t think it was unacceptable what Wayne did, what he did was a natural reaction to a dangerous challenge.”
