Porter is Guyana’s latest FIFA Assistant Referee

GUYANA has produced many top-class Assistant Referees since FIFA introduced specialists Assistant Referees known as Linesmen after the 1990 World Cup.
The likes of Lawrence Griffith, Colin Aaron and recently Dion Inniss, Venton Mars, Rollin Tappin and Abdulla Hamid readily come to mind, with all them excelling in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) and CONCACAF tournaments.
Now Trevor Andrew Porter intends to continue that tradition.
Porter was born on  August 14, 1987 at 13 Uitvlugt Front, West Coast Demerara to Trevor Porter (Sr) and Monica Christiani and to date, he is their only child, growing up in the same house with his aunts, uncles and many cousins who all played football in every available spare time.
Trevor commenced his playing career as a central defender with the Uitvlugt Warriors Football Club at the age of 10, playing for them from the Under-11 to the senior division and after suffering a serious injury, placed his football career on hold to continue his studies.
Some of his cousins who plied the same trade with him were Orville Bobb, a former senior national, Ron Christiani who represented Guyana at the Under-20 level in Cuba and Trayon Bobb who is a professional player with Caledonia AIA.
Trevor (Jr) attended the Uitvlugt Nursery, Stewartville Primary, Leonora Secondary and GITC, and obtained passes in Integrated Science, Social Studies, Business and Office Procedures at CXC, while he studied to become a Fitter Machinist at GITC.
Trevor always wanted to become a referee, but he was of the impression that the referees were always the older guys who did the job hence he never attempted to get seriously involved.
His grandfather was a carpenter and he had always had the ambition of following in his footsteps but he suddenly had a change of heart and set out to become a Fitter Machinist, hence his attendance at GITC.
He recalled as a youngster when he was not building anything with his grandfather he would set up a bicycle, starting with the frame and at the end of the day he had a bicycle to ride.
On acquiring a job in 2008 at JANICO as a Fitter Machinist, he met Venton Mars a FIFA Assistant Referee and during his discussion with Mars, he was informed that Mars was a referee, which left him surprised.
In April 2008 at the Carifesta Sports Complex, the Guyana Football Referees Council conducted a Beginners Referees Course under the tutelage of Griffith known to many as ‘Sparrow’ and out of a class of approximately fifteen persons, Trevor placed third.
His first exposure internationally was a 2010 Inter-Guiana Club Championship encounter between the Guyana Defence Force and a club from French Guiana. He also officiated in the third place playoff of the just concluded 22nd edition of the Kashif and Shanghai Football tournament.
He was also a member of the officiating team for the 2011 East Bank Football Association/Banks DIH Coca Cola League Final and Amerindian Heritage Month Final while in 2009 and the following year, he officiated in the opening games of the Fruta Conquerors/NAMILCO Cup tournament.
Trevor is single and has plans in the not-too-distant future to tie the nuptial knot and raise a family and at present, he attends the St Luke Presbyterian Church at Uitvlugt regularly and is very committed to family life and its values.
With the exclusion of Selwyn Blair and Joel Weeks, two FIFA Assistant Referees from West Demerara from the FIFA list for 2012, Trevor intends to keep the flag flying in a manner which will make the boys from the West Side proud.
