Police trained, ready for post elections period issues

– Crime Chief
CRIME Chief Seelall Persaud said, yesterday, that ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) are trained and ready to deal with any public order issues in the post elections period.
He, however, encouraged Guyanese to accept the results and behave in a decent and civil manner as they are revealed eventually.

Persaud said the Police are maintaining their presence on the streets of the city and in communities countrywide with patrols to ensure that people go about their business without hindrance.
He said there were a few incidents on Monday, which were not related to their main focus of providing security but were more of a Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) issue in which several staffers were fired for varying reasons.
Persaud reported that, on Monday night, persons attempted to break and enter Chetson’s Store, at Lot 73 Wellington Street, Lacytown, Georgetown and assaulted the guard but the police intervened and prevented the burglary.
The Assistant Commissioner also revealed that persons or groups of them, intent on creating public mischief and behaving disorderly, will be dealt with by the police who are continuing to provide security that was available in the run-up to the voting.

Persaud indicated that they have been training for the purpose for some time and are prepared because they have mobilised a riot squad in all divisions, where a unit was established with special training attached to stations in all six Police Divisions for this period.

He added that, in addition, the GPF has an anti-crime unit which is also geared to support the riot squad with ranks in line until normalcy returns after the balloting.

Persaud said GPF is there to maintain law and order until the official results of Elections 2011, despite minor issues relating to GECOM but not security. (Michel Outridge)
