FFP donates needed medical supplies to health sector

FOOD for the Poor (Guyana) Inc (FFP) yesterday donated much needed medical supplies to several health institutions. The handing over was done in the FFP Festival City Board Room and was attended by Dr. Narine Singh, Director of Regional Health Services; Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, Director, Regional Health Authority, Berbice and other representatives of the ministry.
FFP Executive Director, Mr. Leon Davis, said the assortment was given in recognition of the fact that health plays a significant part in the alleviation of poverty in the country.
He pointed out that, though it is the duty of the charitable organisation to assist in feeding and housing the nation’s poor, the provision of health services is an equally important aspect.
In this regard, Davis assured that FFP can redouble its efforts to lend support to the Ministry of Health, providing the necessary framework is in place to allow this.
“We can surely do much more for the health sector but we have had difficulties in the past and we are looking for a way to simplify the process,” he explained.
According to Davis, his organisation has sent a letter to the Ministry of Health, offering to donate $6M towards the renovation of any health centre and is still awaiting a reply.
On that note, he urged that health officials be more cooperative for the overall benefit of the sector.
“More can be done to assist the Ministry of Health and our standard is that we can redouble our efforts to help … we should come together to work out a way to bring in more supplies for the health sector,” he reiterated.
Davis expressed the hope that the gifted items, worth millions of dollars, will be put to good use in the hospitals and health centres, for the benefit of the patients there.
In addition, he encouraged the recipients to give a feedback as to how the supplies are being utilised and the extent of the relief they provide .
“We would like to hear from you. We want feedback, so that the donors in the United States can see  the need for sending more supplies,” Davis implored.
Dr. Mahadeo expressed gratitude to FFP, on behalf of the Regional Health Authority, in Region 6 (East Berbice/Corentyne), while acknowledging the fact that the benefactor has been supportive in many ways, over the years.
“We have had a very long relationship with Food For the Poor as they have been contributing in a major way to the Home Based Care Programme in Berbice,” he said.
This programme caters for bedridden patients in  Berbice, who are visited by a series of health professionals offering medical services.
Dr. Singh extended thanks to FFP for its continued assistance and pledged that the Ministry of Health will work harder to ensure that systems are in place for the continued improvement of the sector.
He pledged that, while there are difficulties in the system, all that is necessary will be done to rectify them.
Meanwhile, several beds were also handed over to the Deputy Headmistress of the North Ruimveldt Multilateral School, Ms. Juliet Mathis, who said, she, too, was grateful to FFP.
