Beacon, Police advance to Milo Under-23 semis

… to battle Conquerors, Santos tonight
BEACON United and Guyana Police Force (GPF) made it through to the semi-final round of the Milo Under-23 Football Tournament when they recorded tough victories over their opponents on Wednesday night at the Tucville Playfield.
In the opening match of the curtain-raiser Beacon United stunned Flamingo with a goal in extra time to win 2-1 while in the feature match GPF arrested the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in a penalty shootout.
Tonight in the semi-final round, Santos will go head-to-head with GPF at 18:00hrs while Fruta Conquerors face Beacon United in the feature match-up from 20:00hrs, to see who will progress to the final.
The tournament victors will receive $100 000 and the runners-up will have to settle for $75 000 while the third- and fourth-place finishers will cart off $50 000 and $25 000, respectively.
Individual prizes are also up for grabs such as Highest Goalscorer, Best Goalkeeper, Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Most Disciplined Team.
On Wednesday night Beacon United recorded a come-from-behind victory over Flamingo as Alpha McPhoy drew first blood as early as the fourth minute then Beacon United’s Desmond Cotton equalised in the 31st minute.
A goalless second half forced the game into extra time when Michael Henry scored the decider in the final minute of the first half of extra time.
In the GDF/GPF match-up, neither team scored in the first 45 minutes as the sides played matching football even though they both had some threatening runs near goal.
However, both teams managed to get a goal to their name but neither had the edge to rush ahead to avoid extra time or the dreaded penalty shootout in which Police secured their victory.
The final is set for Sunday at the same venue with the third-place showdown scheduled to be contested before.
