West Bank Demerara farmers grateful for Agriculture Ministry’s support

AS a cash crop farmer for the past 15 years, kindly permit me to express my appreciation on behalf of myself and farmers of West Bank Demerara (Stanleytown, Canal 1&2 Polders) that benefited from the support provided by the Ministry of Agriculture through the Grow More Food campaign. The support come at a time when globally, farm inputs are high and this support will assist farmers greatly in their activities. Farmers benefited from seeds, fertilizer, chemicals and other planting materials which will be put into productive use to produce fresh vegetables for local and export markets and at the same time support kitchen gardeners to supplement their household incomes.
Additionally, I must compliment the government and staffers of the Ministry of Agriculture for this visionary initiative and to not only talk about growing more, but giving the farmers/kitchen gardeners a start to earn extra money and ensuring a stable supply of food. I am pleased that this initiative has been restructured and revamped as there will always be a demand for food locally and abroad. Guyana will be in a good position to supply and benefit from the opportunities resulting from the global food crisis.
Guyana is very fortunate when compared to most countries where citizens are dying of starvation; and then there are some countries that have the money, but food is not readily accessible as they have to depend on countries like ours and many others to send food.
Finally, I would like to restate my appreciation to the hard-working officers of the Ministry of Agriculture that are serving the needs of farmers and to say that Guyana is on the right track to maintain food security.
