Non Pariel mechanic dies in motorcycle accident

A FATHER of six was killed Saturday night on Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, when he reportedly rode into a pool of water and lost control of the motorcycle he was riding. Dead is mechanic and well-known bird rearer, Elvis Singh, 53, of Lot 118 Railway Embankment, Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara and formerly of Waterloo Street, Georgetown.

Police reported that, at about 23:00hrs on Saturday last, Singh was riding his motor cycle along the roadway when it is reported that he rode into a pool of water and lost control of the bike at Avenue of the Republic.
According to the police report, he fell and received injuries and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His siblings, who were at his home yesterday afternoon when the Chronicle visited, said the man’s death came as a complete shock to them.

They said Singh was reportedly on his way home when the accident occurred.

At his home, where he operated a mechanic shop and lived alone, a black flag was nailed to the gate yesterday as his friends and others showed up in his memory, discussing the man’s untimely death.
Elvis, who is also known as ‘Carlo’, moved from the City to Non Pariel four years ago and was said to be well liked in the community.

He is survived by six brothers, two sisters, and scores of relatives.

The motor scooter he was riding at the time of his demise is currently lodged with the police at Brickdam Police Station.

Meanwhile, Police Traffic Headquarters said that, based on statistics recorded, there has been 71 deaths from 64 road accidents for this year, so far, while for the corresponding period in 2010,  the 62 road accidents claimed the lives of 63 persons.
