Lawyer claims legitimate owner charged with malicious damage

SHALEEZA Hoosain, 37, of Lot 124 Uitvlugt Pasture, appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, at Vreed-en-Hoop Court, also on West Coast Demerara, yesterday, charged with damaging a $1M property.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the offence, which said that, between November 15, 2010 and January 3, 2011, she, unlawfully and maliciously, damaged a house valued $1M, belonging to Bibi Fazeela Khan.
Defence Counsel Moses Nagamootoo claimed that the defendant is the legitimate owner of the land on which the house is situated and the virtual complainant is the one who should be charged for trespassing.
But the prosecutor, Police Corporal Anand Sookhoo said his facts are different and the prosecution has strong evidence against the defendant, who sold the land to the virtual complainant and left for Suriname.
Hoosain was granted $100,000 bail until August 2.
