Gunmen shoot 43-yr-old East Coast resident

Ramdat Balkarran, of Goedverwagting on the East Coast of Demerara, was shot in the abdomen by intruders who invaded his home at around 02:00hrs yesterday.
According to a report from a senior officer at the Cove and John Police Station, the victim’s son, 23-year-old David Persaud, reported that he was awakened by a tap on the shoulder and saw two men armed with handguns standing over him.
Persaud related that the armed men threatened him when he attempted to raise an alarm so as to alert his parents who were still asleep.
“He cried out and they threatened to shoot him if he did not shut up and they subsequently took him to his parents’ room,” the officer said.
The police report noted that Persaud’s mother opened the bedroom door and after seeing the intruders, attempted to thwart their entry.
As to the events that transpired after this, the rank explained that the gun-toting burglars then kicked the door in and fired a shot through a small opening.
During the entire ordeal, the armed men kept demanding that the family hand over money after forcing them to lie face down on the living room floor.
Meanwhile, David Persaud was taken into his bedroom where he was beaten and repeatedly threatened if he did not hand over cash and jewellery.
“During this time, David said he heard an explosion which sounded like a gunshot, and at this point they left,” the officer revealed.
After the bandits’ departure, Persaud discovered that his father had sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
The 43-year-old Balkarran was then rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation by family members, and underwent emergency surgery to have the bullet removed. He is now in a stable condition in the Male Medical Ward.
It is not yet confirmed if anything was taken away by the two men.

According to a police report, Schwartz, who resides in Plaisance Village on the East Coast of Demerara, was on her way to the bathroom when she encountered a stranger she believed to be her stepson.
After noticing that the person’s face was covered, the housewife became alarmed and realized she was facing a masked intruder.
The police report noted Schwartz attempted to run to her room after the gun man pointed the gun at her.
Two loud explosions rang out as the terrified woman attempted to escape only to discover a second intruder at the western door in her home.
The two masked gunmen made good their escape through the back door of the house after Schwartz raised an alarm.
