GRC appeals for assistance

….as it assists fire victims
As the Guyana Relief Council (GRC) continues to provide accommodation, food and other necessities for persons left homeless following Monday’s fire at High and Barracks Street, Kingston, the organisation is making an appeal to other agencies and individuals to contribute towards restoring the livelihood of those persons affected.
Officials of the charitable Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) said that on a visit to the site of the fire Monday afternoon, they met with 37 persons and offered them accommodation at their temporary shelter at Riverview, Ruimveldt. This number included 20 adults, 10 children and 7 babies. However, 19 persons elected to take up shelter at the facility, and are currently being accommodated there.
Overall, about 90 persons were rendered homeless when fire destroyed the building on Monday, and those rescued by the GRC were moved across to the facility the same night. The GRC has said that they would be happy and willing to provide all the needs of the persons affected, but they are restrained because of limited resources.
The Council outlined that for the year so far, it has aided 29 families comprising 132 persons who were displaced due to disasters. It said persons at the temporary shelter are provided with basic amenities, including food and other necessities.
The GRC said it would be happy to have support in the form of bed linen, bath towels, pampers, sanitary napkins, adult and children’s underwear, soap, toilet paper, toilet cleansers, mops, buckets, washing tubs,  cups, plates and spoons.
Secretary Nirmala Ramroopter Wellem added that monetary contributions are also very welcome, to assist in defraying other related expenses.
The Guyana Relief Council is a charitable organisation established to provide material assistance to persons affected by natural and man -made disasters in Guyana.
Persons wishing to make donations may contact the GRC’s Administrative Officer on Telephone number: 225-3081,or visit the office at Lot X Public Road, Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
