Four injured as Honda CRV slams into Mc Doom mosque

Four persons were last night rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital in critical condition, after being involved in a motor vehicle accident  at Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara, around 19:30h. They were all pulled from the badly crushed vehicle alive and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The driver, 20-year-old Dereck Seeram, of First and Cross Streets, Alexander Village, was admitted in an unconscious state, while the others, though conscious, sustained varying degrees of injuries and were late last night being monitored by doctors at the institution.

It was high drama last night, witnesses recalled, when the speeding Honda CRV PJJ 665, bearing the numbers ‘007’ on the windshield, ran out of control as it approached the Mc Doom four-lane bridge; it smashed the rail of the bridge, flew over a 35-foot trench, and came to an abrupt halt in the masjid compound, after slamming the wall of the building.
As the motor car hit and broke the fence, a huge piece of concrete flew some 20 feet into the air and struck the roof of the building, severely damaging it.

Imam Mohamed Rafeek, who spoke with this newspaper, recalled that the first service had just concluded and about five members were in the mosque, preparing for the start of the second service.
“The impact was very heavy,” said Imam Rafeek, who related that pandemonium broke out, as persons dived for cover.
“I immediately ran towards the door, not knowing what it was, but when we looked, we saw the car, badly crushed, partially covered with rubble and the occupants pinned inside.”  The seats were literally folded up.

The brothers in the mosque and other residents and passersby immediately ran to the rescue, pulled the injured occupants – three men and one woman– from the wreck, and rushed them to the hospital.
