$1.8M larceny defendant refused bail

– after robbing ‘walking salesman’
DELROY Parks (no address given), who is charged with stealing merchandise worth a total of  $1,831,500 from a walking salesman, was refused bail on Wednesday.
He appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, at Whim Court, accused of committing the offence while the virtual complainant, Shahad Abrahim, was dining in a Chinese restaurant, at Bush Lot, also on Corentyne, Berbice.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said Parks had also gone to the eating house and he placed an order for a meal. But, as he waited for the food, he grabbed Abrahim’s bag and the owner pursued him unsuccessfully.
The prosecutor said the alleged thief was arrested, subsequently, with assistance from the police but the booty, which included 18 cell phones, five MP3 players, a Kodak camera, jewellery, G$240,000 and  US$475, was not recovered.
The court upheld the police objection to the grant of pre-trial liberty to Parks on the grounds that he is a persistent offender with other similar cases pending and would, likely, flee the jurisdiction. (Jeune Bailey Vankeric)
