NBTS continues appeal for more voluntary donors

COORDINATOR of the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), Ms. Shameeza Mangal said, yesterday, that it has not met its collection target for March and continues to appeal for voluntary donors. She said several blood drives have been scheduled for April and the aim is to accumulate 10,000 units by the end of the year.
Mangal said to achieve that goal, the different regions must each collect approximately 800 units.
She said between four and eight per cent of the adult population needs to come on board with the Good Samaritan Programme and donate voluntarily to the flagship blood donor recruitment scheme.
Mangal said it is designed to encourage all adult Guyanese to become donors and allows each to contribute to saving lives. Through it, the Health Ministry aims to recruit some 7,000 people to make regular blood donations.
Volunteers are welcome at all five sites nationwide, the NBTS headquarters in Georgetown, West Demerara Regional Hospital, New Amsterdam, Suddie and Linden hospitals.
Persons requiring further information can telephone number  227-0418.
