Permaul and Bishoo bowl Guyana to first innings points

WICB Regional 4 Day
WEST Indies ‘A’ team spinners Veerasammy Permaul (6-60) and Devendra Bishoo (4-61) combined to bowl Barbados out for 202 just after the lunch break yesterday, as Guyana maintained their stranglehold at the end of the third day’s play in their West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) fourth round four day match at the Guyana National Stadium, yesterday.
Scores: Guyana 330 and 90-4, Barbados 202.

With a first innings lead of 128, Guyana’s openers Rajendra Chandrika (24) and Assad Fudadin (11) started cautiously, before Fudadin drove Fidel Edwards who shared the new ball with his skipper Ryan Hinds, through cover and back ward square for back to back boundaries off successive deliveries in the fifth over.

Left- arm medium-fast bowler Pedro Collins replaced Edwards at the Media Centre End and got success with his fifth delivery, when he induced Fudadin to drive at one outside the off stump, wherein the Guyanese skipper got a thick outside edge to Dale Richards at first slip, Guyana 19-1.

Leon Johnson (21) replaced Fudadin and after seeing Guyana to 31-1 at tea, struck Collins for a four through backward square leg to raise Guyana’s 50 after 23 overs, before he was caught at the wicket by Richards who was deputizing for Shane Dowrich who had earlier top scored in Barbados’ innings, suffering from cramps, off Jason Holder.

Richards was in the act again, this time taking a brilliant catch one handed to his right to remove Chandrika off Kevin Stoute’s fifth delivery of his first over followed by the demise of Gajanand Singh who was caught at extra cover by Edwards for two also off Stoute, leaving Guyana on 65-3 and a lead of 193.

Royston Crandon who struck the final delivery of the day bowled by Kraigg Braithwaite for six and Vishal Singh were not out on 15 and 9 respectively, as Guyana ended the day on 90-4, a lead of 218 with seven second innings wickets intact heading into the final day today.

Earlier, Barbados resumed on 88 for 6 in reply to Guyana’s 330, with Braithwaite on 31 and Roston Chase 4, but they lost Braithwaite who was lbw to Permaul to a delivery that kept low and he was quickly followed by Chase who was bowled by a Bishoo delivery that spun across him after the 100 was posted in the 46th over.

Permaul and Bishoo took back Guyana to the days of Neil Mc Garrell and Mahendra Nagamootoo, as they maintained their stranglehold on the Barbadian batting line up from the previous day, showing off their visitors’ susceptibility to spin bowling.

Braithwaite made 34 with four fours off 118 deliveries and 140 minutes batting, while Chase made 11 with two fours. After the first hour’s play for the day, Barbados who started the game on nine points, two ahead of Guyana were 118-7 with Shane Dowrich on 17 and Ryan Layne 3.

Dowrich and Layne added 75 important runs for the eight wicket, with Dowrich who made his debut at this level against Guyana last year at Albion, posting his maiden half century from 94 balls and 93 minutes of batting, while he struck five fours, with the fifth one being a flick off Bess through backward square leg.

At the luncheon interval, Dowrich who was on 57 and Layne 20 had carried Barbados to 178-7 off 74 overs, needing two more runs to avoid the follow-on  and they duly got same, when Dowrich turned Permaul to backward square leg for two, while Layne was lbw to Permaul’s final delivery of the first over after lunch.

Permaul struck again, picking up his first five wicket haul for the season when he had Edwards adjudged lbw to leave Barbados on 181-9, which should have been 183 all out, had Chandrika not floored a chance from Dowrich at point off Barnwell, when the batsman was on 58.

The batsman responded by hitting Bishoo through point for four to raise Barbados’ 200, while pushing his score to 76, before he was bowled by Permaul who ended with 6-60 and along with Bishoo’s 4-60, combined to route the visitors, leaving Collins unbeaten on 3.
