GABA planning Caribbean Championships – Ninvalle

GUYANA may find itself as the host of the next Caribbean Boxing  Championships  competition if the present executive of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association has its way.
Speaking in Parliament during the current budget debate Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steve Ninvalle revealed that plans are under way to have the championships held here by June.
“The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association is currently planning a resuscitation of the Caribbean Boxing Championships which should  be held in Guyana this year,” Ninvalle, who is also president of GABA said.
“Apart from providing high-level and much needed competition for our young fighters, the staging of the competition here paves the way for Guyana’s return to the hierarchy of regional boxing. It also stands to assist in the international rankings of our fighters,” he added.
The Caribbean Championships was not held in years and the hosting of it here would be a huge undertaking. However, according to Ninvalle, his executive stands ready for the task and letters of invitation will be sent out this week.
The intention, the Government Member of Parliament added, is to have at least eight countries participating.
GABA has started this year on a high note with the running-off of a four-day referee/judges seminar. The seminar was conducted by Trinidadian James Beckles and it concluded on Sunday.
