Stabroek Rotary launches Peace Poster competition

“Spreading peace through cultural diversity” is the theme for the Rotary Club of Stabroek’s Peace Poster competition. The competition is one of the activities planned by the club to celebrate World Understanding Month observed during February. One of the highlights of the month is the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary held on February 23, 1905, now designated World Understanding and Peace Day.
The competition promotes Rotary’s Fourth Avenue of Service – continued quest for goodwill, peace and understanding among people of the world. The initiative targets young people aged 12-14 to visually depict their interpretation of the competition’s theme. It is a unique opportunity for youths to stress the importance of peace, tolerance and international understanding.
Only one entry per participant is allowed and each entry must be accompanied by a separate piece of paper stating participant’s name, age, sex, address, telephone number, name of parent/guardian, along with his/her signature. It should also include the artist’s interpretation of his/her artwork in not more than 200 words. Only original artwork must be submitted. Crayons, markers, water colour paints, oil paints or coloured pencils can be used to complete the entry on 18” x 24” art board/paper/canvas.
Posters would be judged by a panel of judges for creativity, originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme, explanation of artwork and presentation.
The winning entry will be replicated and disseminated to youth groups, schools and youth- focused organisations across the country to promote peace messages. The winner of the competition will receive a cash prize of G$50,000, a plaque and book awards. Second place winner will receive a cash prize of G$30,000, a plaque and book award; and third place winner will receive a cash prize of G$20,000, a plaque and book award.

The competition closes on February 25th 2011. Entry boxes can be found at all Republic Bank locations nationwide, and IPED offices in Parika, D’Edward Village, Mabaruma and Lethem. Winners will be invited to a special presentation ceremony and will be publicised in the local media.
