GDF officer killed in East Bank smash-up

…was not wearing a helmet, died of massive head injuries
Twenty-seven-year-old Vijai Singh is the latest road fatality for the year.
He succumbed to head injuries at the Leonora Hospital after colliding with a vehicle on the East Bank Essequibo Public Road at 19.00hrs on Saturday.
According to his widow, Lorraine Selene, Vijay left home to visit a friend and about fifteen minutes later she received a call that her husband was involved in an accident.
Selene related that immediately after leaving their home in the Tuschen Housing Scheme, her husband, who was riding a CBR motorcycle, collided with another vehicle on the public road.

“I was not there but some eyewitnesses told me that he hit a car and fell off of his bike;  after that, someone took him to Leonora Hospital where he died,’ the grieving  wife  said.
According to Selene, her husband was very dedicated to his job as a Lance Corporal in the Guyana Defense Force.
“There are two things that he loved, his job and bodybuilding, and now he is gone,” she lamented.

Meanwhile, a senior officer at the Leonora Police Station, where the matter was reported, told the Guyana Chronicle that Singh, who was headed along the East Bank Public Road, collided with a Toyota Highlander which was headed east and turning into the Double –Day International Hotel.
“From our investigations, it would appear that Singh was speeding along the highway and when the vehicle turned into the hotel, the motor bike hit the back of the vehicle which sent the bike into a skid,” the officer related.
In addition, the police rank said the 27-year-old GDF officer was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, nor was he in possession of a valid motorcycle license.
He said, “It was an unfortunate way to die; and because he was not wearing a helmet he sustained massive head injuries.”
The driver of the Toyota Highlander is presently in police custody as investigations continue.
Vijai Singh is survived by his wife, his mother, and two siblings.
