Chapman’s ‘Brer Anancy Stories’ captures Junior Calypso Monarch crown

YOUNG personnel clerk, Ms Diana Chapman, attached to the Regional Democratic Council’s administrative arm of Region Ten, Upper Demerara /Upper Berbice, cheered on by a huge following from where she resides in Amelia’s Ward, Linden, became the new Junior Calypso Monarch of Guyana on Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground. With a commanding performance of her calypso, ‘Bring Back Brer Anancy’, she won the coveted crown. The crown had eluded her last year when she was second to the defending champion Tennicia De Freitas, who had to settle for second this time around, with her ‘Can’t Take It No More’ rendition, as another two-time monarch, Ms Ernest Nelson, was pushed into third spot with “E Too Much’ .
Ms Chapman’s calypso reflected on years ago when things were cheap, the bus rides in the city’s yellow buses, and all that one can recall in the ‘good ole days,’ which all now sound like Brer Anancy stories

Speaking of her capturing the crown, Ms Chapman said, “It was very, very tough, I was kind of shaky but everything turned out well. I plan to step it up a little bit more and go out there and represent Linden and do my best.”
The announcement was well received by all and it was indeed pleasing to see the graceful look on the face of the deposed ‘queen’, Ms De Freitas, as she graciously hugged Ms Chapman.
Others who performed included Jedidah Wilkinson with ‘Wha Really Happening’; the youngest performer, 15-year-old Nickesha Nedd with ‘Freedom’; Le Shana Valentine with ‘Unity’; and Yoland Nedd with ‘Women Under Siege’ .
