Guyana trounce Academy to hit back from loss
POINTE-A-PIERRE, Trinidad (CMC) – Regional Twenty20 champions Guyana bounced back from a shock defeat on Tuesday to score a comprehensive 83-run win over the National Academy XI in their second match of the Twenty20 Festival here Wednesday evening.
Sewnarine Chattergoon stroked an even half-century and veteran left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul got 49, as Guyana scored 164 for eight off their allotted 20 overs after winning the toss and batting.
Teenaged left-arm pacer Andre Stoll then snatched three for 23 and leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo stole a hat-trick as the Academy XI were bundled out for 81 off 16.2 overs.
The victory compensated for Guyana’s embarrassment on the opening day of the tournament when they went down to T&T ‘A’.
Playing at Guaracara Park, Guyana lost Travis Dowlin without a run on the board but Chattergoon combined with captain Ramnaresh Sarwan in a 57-run second-wicket stand to steady the innings.
Chattergoon’s half-century required 41 balls and contained four fours while Sarwan stroked 24 from 18 balls with two sixes.
When both fell to leave Guyana on 84 for three, Chanderpaul kept the innings together with a patient knock off 30 balls, smashing four fours and one six.
Left-arm spinner Yannic Ottley finished with three for 21 while fast bowler Daniel St Clair claimed two for 26.
Stoll then claimed both openers Nicholas Sookdeosingh (10) and Nicholas Alexis (14) as Guyana struck early and Bishoo’s exploits later in the innings ensured the Academy never recovered.
Derone Davis top-scored with 20 down the order.
