Guyanese swimmers secure gold and silver in Marlins Invitational

GUYANA’S Jessica Stephenson earned her second medal at the Marlins Invitational Meet – a gold in the 200m breaststroke, completing the distance in a time of 2:46.88, last Friday. Jessica rushed down the pool in a very convincing 18 seconds ahead of the silver medallist, Sangeeta Maharaj of Stingrays, and secured the only Carifta A time of the event, while another Guyanese, Athina Gaskin, finished seventh in the same event with a 3:23.02.
Athina’s brother Hannibal Gaskin took 10 seconds off his personal best time in the Boys 11-12 years old 200m breast stroke to finish a creditable eighth. 
Guyana’s other medallist was Niall Roberts who finished with a  silver medal in the 15 and over 50m butterfly, clocking a personal best 26.71.
Noelle Smith clocked 32.82 to finish 11th in the Girls’ Under-15 50m butterfly, while Athina Gaskin and Soraya Simmons finished 14th and 21st in the Girls 13 to 14 50m butterfly, clocking 35.69 and 38.06 respectively.
Hannibal Gaskin swimming the same race (50m butterfly) for the Boys 11-12 age group managed a new personal best of 34.70 to secure 17th place. 
The Meet started with all of Guyana’s swimmers contesting the 100m freestyle, with Hannibal Gaskin clocking a personal best of 1:09.53, knocking four seconds off his previous time as he took the event.
The Girls 13-14 category was next in the pool and Athina Gaskin finished 10th ahead of Jessica Stephenson (13th) and Simmons (17th) while Smith and Roberts finished sixth in the 15-and-over Girls’ and Boys’ categories, with Roberts managing another personal best.
