Previously mum murder accused pleads on second appearance

At Berbice Assizes…
GOWKARRAN Ramdayal, who remained mum when he appeared before Justice Dawn Gregory-Barnes at the Berbice Assizes, earlier this week, pleaded not guilty to murder when he made another Court appearance yesterday.
The judge had ordered that he be psychiatrically evaluated on Tuesday, after he failed to respond to questions posed to him.
However, without having the evaluation done, the prisoner returned to the courtroom and responded in an impassioned tone, much to the surprise of those present.
He even challenged two jurors before the panel was sworn for the trial to commence next Tuesday.
Ramdayal is indicted for unlawfully killing his father, during a misunderstanding at Queenstown, Corriverton, Corentyne, on January 16, 2008.
The case for the Prosecution is that, on October 10, 2007, the accused lashed his father on the head with a piece of iron pipe and a steel rod.
The injured man was taken to Skeldon Hospital, then to New Amsterdam Hospital, both in Berbice, before being transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was a patient for a month.
On his discharge from there, the victim was staying at the home of a relative, in Number 65 Village, Corentyne, prior to being re-admitted to Skeldon Hospital, where he died on January 16, 2008.
A post mortem examination found that he succumbed to septicaemia and fracture of the skull.
