T&T finish nightmare Digicel Cup campaign with 1-0 win

FORT DE FRANCE, Martinique (CMC) – Trinidad and Tobago completed a nightmare Digicel Caribbean Cup Finals campaign with a victory over Martinique on Tuesday night, a win that was unlikely to erase the embarrassment of their preliminary round exit. Hughton Hector’s 47th minute strike was enough to see off the hosts, as T&T grabbed their first points to end a miserable tournament third in Group H.
The hosts, meanwhile, finished bottom of the group following their draw with Grenada on opening night.
In the other game at the Pierre Aliker Stadium, Grenada and Cuba played to a nil-all draw with both teams having already progressed to the semi-finals.
Seeking to finish on a high after disappointing losses to Cuba and Grenada, T&T would have been searching for a strong result but could muster only the one goal.
Devorn Jorsling had the first real chance to put T&T on their way early on but he squandered the chance after being put one-on-one with goalkeeper Eddy Heurlie, thanks to a fine cross from Hector.
Midfielder Kevin Molino then also dragged an effort wide of the far post as T&T went to the break without a goal to their credit.
This would change two minutes after the interval, however, as Anthony Wolfe crossed from the right for Hector to convert from close range.
The Trinidadians almost doubled their lead on 62 minutes when Keon Daniel set up Jorsling but the striker scuffed his volley from near point blank range, and the ball lobbed wide.
Jorsling was the guilty party twelve minutes later when captain Clyde Leon put in a great cross but the resulting header was easily dealt with by Heurlie.
The French custodian denied T&T just minutes later after Kendall Jagdeosingh, a 76th minute substitute, broke on a one-one-chance.
