Police arrest suspect in torching of Health Ministry

…decomposed bodies found in Kara Kara Creek backlands
The  decomposed bodies of two men, one of whom was identified as Kurt Thierens, also known as ‘Glasses’, were yesterday found by the Police in separate shallow graves in the backlands of the Kara Kara Creek, Linden, Region Ten.

This is according to a release issued by the police late yesterday.

This discovery came on the heels of the arrest of alleged arsonist Colin Jones, ‘fingered’ in the burning down of the Ministry of Health in July, 2009.

Additionally, police said, a makeshift camp covered with a tarpaulin was found in the area and in the camp two AK-47 Rifles without magazines, a quantity of 7.62 x 39 rounds, a grenade, two bullet-proof vests, and a number of flares were found.

Two fields with about 1,800 cannabis sativa (marijuana) plants ranging between 2 feet and 6 feet in height were found and destroyed by the police ranks who also found a 10 foot boat with a Yamaha outboard motor engine in a swampy area adjoining the creek.

Police Crime Chief Seelall Persaud yesterday confirmed that Jones, for whom an arrest warrant had been issued following the torching of the Ministry, was arrested early yesterday morning. He was among four suspects for whom arrest warrants were issued.

Following his arrest, Jones yesterday led the police to the shallow grave where the grizzly discovery was made.

Persaud had earlier yesterday said that Police had recovered an AK-47 assault rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition, one boat engine on a marijuana field before the fugitive was taken into custody.

The Assistant Commissioner (Law Enforcement) said Jones was wanted for investigations into several crimes, including a murder and hijacking on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, a shooting at the Brickdam Police Station and setting fire to the High Court building, also in Georgetown.

He said Jones had lobbed a grenade at police who were hunting him after an incident in Amelia’s Ward, Linden, on Thursday afternoon.

According to the senior law Enforcement official, the AK-47 is not one of the 30 reported stolen from the Guyana Defence Force , together with six pistols from its military storage bond at Base Camp Ayanganna in early 2006.

Jones was apprehended about 02:30hrs after having been overwhelmed by Police as he emerged from a clump of bushes in Amelia’s Ward.

Meanwhile, giving details of the incident leading up to the arrest, the police press release issued late yesterday said that around 16:00hrs on Thursday, ranks responded to information received that a man was seen in the Amelia’s Ward, Linden, area and acting suspiciously.

Upon their arrival, the man was not seen but further information was received which led to the recovery, in a bushy area at Amelia’s Ward, of an AK-47 rifle, seven magazines, 198 rounds 7.62 x 39 ammunition, 2 pairs handcuffs, one camouflage bullet-proof vest, a green long-sleeved overcoat, a green haversack and a Bible.

While ranks were dealing with this matter, the statement said, another police patrol responded to a report that a man was seen walking along the Amelia’s Ward Public Road with what appeared to be a grenade in his hand. As the ranks approached, the suspect, he threw the grenade at the police and ran into the nearby bushes while the ranks took evasive action. The ranks pursued the suspect, came under fire from him and they returned fire. He however managed to elude the police.

The grenade did not explode.

The area was cordoned off, and with the assistance of additional ranks from force headquarters the search for the suspect continued way into the night.

Meanwhile, around 03:00hrs yesterday, police responded to further information received that a man clad in underwear only was seen at Amelia’s Ward. This information led to the arrest of a man with a suspected gunshot wound to his shoulder.  That man was identified as the  wanted man Colin Jones, called “Bunny”, for whom a wanted bulletin was issued following the burning down of the ministry of health.

Jones had been on the run for some time now, and according to the police, was the man seen earlier on the Amelia’s Ward Public Road with the grenade.

Investigations are continuing.
