In Berbice… Fish vendor robbed after redeeming Courts coupons

A FISH vendor was robbed of her gold chain, following a transaction at J’s Supermarket in New Amsterdam, Berbice. Pushpawattie Persaud, age 23 years, of Fyrish Village, Corentyne, had earlier visited Courts Furniture Store, New Amsterdam Branch, where she had purchased a freezer.
Following the purchase, she was issued with shopping coupons valued $4000, redeemable at the supermarket on Republic Road, commonly referred to as ‘Back dam’.
On completing the deal, Persaud left the business premises and was walking along King Street, a lane north of the supermarket, when she observed a dreadlocked man standing under a shed in the vicinity of the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court.
Within seconds of passing him, he quickly walked behind her, grabbed her gold chain valued $40,000 and escaped.
An eyewitness at the Court house said the incident occurred within seconds, and the reality of the theft dawned on her when the victim screamed: “Thief”.
The matter was reported to Central Police Station where sleuths are investigating.
