Williams takes inaugural PowerAde/Sprite feature event

RORAIMA Bikers Club’s (RBC) Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams out-sprinted his rivals which included his club mate Warren ‘40’ McKay to take the feature race for Novices and Schoolboys in the inaugural PowerAde/Sprite race programme held around the inner circuit of the National Park yesterday.
Fifteen (15) cyclists heard the shrill of the starter Joseph Britton’s whistle, but only six completed the 35-lap event, with McKay, Robin Persaud, Tony Simon, Eric Sankar and Ricky Kissoon completing the top six behind Williams who recorded a time of 1h 23m 52s.
It was the perfect warm-up for Williams, who is known as a hard worker on the road and one of the best sprinters around today, for the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/Ministry of Health fourth Ride for Life five-stage event which pedals off on Thursday.

He left his opponents bewildered when he made his move to the front on the final lap from 800 metres out to ride away with a comfortable win, doing so by 25 metres over McKay who out-sprinted Persaud for second place.
Apart from his second place finish, McKay also carted off four prime prizes with Williams (2) and Simon and Sankar taking one each in the event which was organised and coordinated by national cycling coach Hassan Mohamed.
Earlier, Julio Melville took the BMX Boys Open race from Adrian Sharma and Darius Ramsammy with Naomi Singh taking the three-lap event from Ricardo Sharma and Golyn Debideen.
Kennard Lovell continues to rule the roost in the Veterans Under-50 category, winning that event from Davindra Ramnarine and Allan Persaud while Linden’s Kirkwood Kellman took the Over-50 division from Lancelot Rose and Harry Lall.
Paul De Nobrega also enjoyed success when he won the Juveniles 10 laps event from Kurt La Rose and Akeem Arthur after Ozia McAulay took the Upright category from Mario King and Ravendra Rodrigues respectively.
Keon Harris and Randy Haynes won the BMX Boys 6-9 and 9-12 category from Rashidi Ceres and Nicholas D’Andrade and Adrian Sharma and Christopher Griffith respectively.
Banks DIH Outdoor Events manager Mortimer Stewart was on hand to assist with the presentation of prizes, prior to which he stated his company was using the opportunity to sample the product which is rich in B12 and urged all sports personnel to use same. He said his company would continue to support sports in the future. (Calvin Roberts)
