CORENTYNE businessman and President of the Guyana Rice Producers Association (RPA), Mr. Leekha Rambridge, was reportedly shot yesterday in the region of the chest and upper right arm while tending his rice fields, but details are hazy.

Mr. Basdeo Rambridge, his son, told the Guyana Chronicle that his dad left home around 10:30h for his rice fields aback Bengal, on the Corentyne, and that that was where the incident occurred.
“He called my mother and then the phone cut off, so she called him back,” Basdeo said. “When she get through to him, he told her to send someone to collect him; something happen. When he come out, we carry him to Port Mourant, and he get saline and so. Then they send him to New Amsterdam,” he said.
The young man confirmed that the shooting was not connected to a robbery, but was unable to say under what circumstances it occurred.
RPA General Secretary, Mr. Dharamkumar Seeraj, and other well-wishers were reportedly on site to lend moral support to the Rambridge family, while Agriculture Minister, Mr Robert Persaud has assured them of his and his Ministry’s support.
