Four in custody for young miner’s murder

Murder at Moruca…
-Village council bans fishermen from plying trade at waterfront

MORUCA residents are reeling in shock following an altercation Friday night that left a 21-year-old miner dead, and four fishermen under investigation.
The miner, Damian LaRose, who apparently moonlights as a pump attendant, was reportedly stabbed to death by a fisherman at the Moruca Waterfront Friday at around 21:00h, though Police say it was closer to 22:00h.  The incident took place not far from the bridge that links the villages of Kumaka and Santa Rosa.

Reports reaching the Guyana Chronicle say that the two men were involved in a heated argument, when LaRose was allegedly stabbed by the fisherman with an ice pick under the left breast.
According to the Police, they learnt that LaRose was drinking with friends at a shop when the argument arose, and he was stabbed.
The severely injured miner was reportedly rushed to the Moruca hospital by public-spirited citizens, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Reports out of the community, which is located in the North West District, said that the deceased had only returned from the interior the previous week, leaving behind his father, who is also a miner.
Other reports state that one of the four fishermen in custody is the alleged assailant, while the other three are his crew buddies, and hail from Devonshire Castle village on the Essequibo Coast.
Following the incident, the Moruca Village Council has, with immediate effect, banned all fishermen from selling fish at the waterfront.
Prior to the murder, the Village Council would normally give fishing crews permission to stay in the area for up to three days to sell their catch to the villagers.
Besides confirming the arrests, the Police say that a team from Force Headquarters here in the city has been deployed to Moruca to assist with investigations into LaRose’s death.
