-three persons in custody, including mother and stepfather
Three persons including, the mother and step father are in police custody following the brutal murder of Neesa Lalita Gopaul, 16, of Lot 13 A Lenora Public Road, West Coast Demerara.

The police in a press statement said yesterday that three persons were taken into custody as they continue with investigations pertaining to the discovery of the headless corpse of a woman with a broken left hand, found about 14:45 h on Saturday, October 2, 2010, at the Emerald Tower Resort, Madewini, Linden / Soesdyke Highway.
Sleuths  at the scene found a passport in the name of Neessa Lalita Gopaul together with other documents as they removed the body from a suitcase which was tied with rope and anchored by a piece of iron in the Madewini Creek, police reported.
The person whose name appeared on the travel document was reported missing since September 24, 2010 and last night the body was identified by close relatives as that of the person whose name appeared on the passport.
Police said the body of Nessa Lalita Gopaul is at a city mortuary awaiting post mortem as investigations are continuing.
Meanwhile, Gopaul’s grandmother, Abida Kayul, 64, of Lot 15 Anna Catherina Sea View, West Coast Demerara told the Guyana Chronicle that the police telephoned them earlier yesterday and requested that her husband accompany them to identify the body of their loved one.

The grieving woman added that she last saw her granddaughter two Sundays ago when her younger sister and her visited the home and spent the day.
She pointed out that the teenager celebrated her 16th birthday in September this year and was a former student of Queens College and was in fourth form.
Mrs. Kayul said that her daughter woke up two Fridays ago and realised that Gopaul was missing but did not report her missing but went to look for her.
The woman explained that since the death of Gopaul’s father last year she became troubled and often complained about her stepfather, who moved in the home two weeks following the death of her father.
Relatives disclosed that Gopaul’s father was a diabetic and died under questionable circumstances last year.
Mrs. Kayul said her granddaughter disapproved of the relationship and they often quarreled since the property was left to her by her dead father and she wanted the man out of the house.
Last night Gopaul’s fiver-year-old sister was staying with the grandmother and a large group of relatives, friends and neighbours had gathered to comfort them.
Relatives told the Guyana Chronicle that the stepfather often ill-treated the teenager, who confided in them that he had raped her in her sleep and she wanted him gone.
She had even asked relatives to take her and her sister to live with them, a decision they regretted not taking owing to the fact that the young girl was murdered in such a brutal manner.
Gopaul’s mother and her stepfather operate a spare parts business out of their home and at the time Gopaul was not attending school.
Relatives said that Gopaul was the sole beneficiary of the property much to the annoyance of the stepfather, who is a known character to the police.
