Demerara beat Berbice in GCB/El Dorado Inter-county clash

..Dowlin, Sarwan and Chandrika hit half centuries
LED by three responsible innings from Travis Dowlin, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Rajendra Chandrika, coupled with discipline bowling from Kellon Carmichael, Demerara defeated Berbice by 71 runs in their second round fixture of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) El Dorado Inter-county tournament at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground yesterday.

Asked to take first strike by the defending champions who defeated Essequibo comfortably by eight wickets the previous day, Dowlin struck 72, Sarwan 57 and Chandrika 54 as Demerara scored 258-5 from their 42 overs.
In their reply, Berbice struggled against the bowling of Carmichael (4-38), left arm fast bowler Andre Stoll (2-27) and Steven Jacobs who took 2-37 and were bowled out for 157 from 36 overs despite Royston Crandon and Narsingh Deonarine contributing 51 and 55 respectively.

Dowlin struck three sixes and four fours in his knock which took him 69 balls to compile before he was run out by Veerasammy Permaul after pushing a delivery to point, bringing an end to a 129 run first wicket partnership with Chandrika in the 24th over.
Sarwan struck three fours and two sixes in his 57 while Chandrika struck one four in his 88 balls innings before he was run out by Devendra Bishoo at 142-2, after the bowler got his hands to a drive from Sarwan that ricochet onto the stumps with the batsman well short of his ground.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul made a workmanlike 19, Christopher Barnwell 13 while Leon Johnson was unbeaten on 25 that was decorated with two fours and the same number of sixes when Demerara’s overs ran out.
When Berbice batted, they thought they would have gotten a positive start from their openers Sewnarine Chattergoon and Richard Ramdeen who had added 180 for the first wicket with Ramdeen hitting the first ton (102) against Essequibo the previous day.
But fast bowlers Kellon Carmichael who took 4-38 and Andre Stoll 2-37 had other ides in mind when they sent back both batsmen inside the first five overs of their team’s innings, with only five runs on the tins.
Narsingh Deonarine who struck three fours in his top score of 55 and skipper Assad Fudadin (28; 2×4), added 64 for the third wicket before Fudadin holed out to long on where Dowlin took a comfortable catch off Steven Jacobs who supported Carmichael and Stoll amicably well by taking 2-37 with his off spinners.
Royston Crandon chipped in with 51 that was decorated with two fours and one six, before he picked out Jacobs on the midwicket boundary off a slower delivery from Carmichael, following which the innings folded meekly as only Jonathan Foo (14) reached double figures.
Demerara will now face Essequibo on Wednesday at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground.
