Speaker’s son robbed, Police hold suspect

Crime Chief, Seelall Persaud yesterday said that one man is in police custody and some of the stolen items recovered following a robbery at the Georgetown Seawall on Tuesday on the son of Speaker of the National Assembly.
One of the men who allegedly attacked and robbed Nikhil Ramkarran and his friend, Michael Lam, while they were taking sunset photos at the Georgetown Seawall, has been nabbed and the expensive high-tech Pentax camera recovered.

Police sources said that they immediately recognized the suspects when they were shown a picture taken by Lam. His camera was not stolen.
Money totalling almost $20,000, Ramkarran’s wedding band and his cellular phone were not yet found although the suspect told police he had all the items.
Nikhil Ramkarran, the son of the Speaker of Guyana’s National Assembly, Ralph Ramkarran, was one of two persons robbed Tuesday by gun-toting bandits on the Georgetown Seawall behind the Pegasus Hotel.
Sources said Nikhil, who takes pictures as a hobby, was robbed of an expensive camera, his wedding band and cellular phone by the robbers who arrived and escaped on BMX bicycles.
According to a post on his Facebook, he said he was “robbed” and another man whose name was given only as Mike was “beaten”, but was out of danger.
However Mike’s camera was not stolen and it was used to capture a photo of the alleged robbers.
“We have been able to identify them from the picture already, by the way, thanks for your help, it was the picture on Facebook that did it. The police are looking for them, apparently they are known to the police,” said Ramkarran.
