Remanded passenger claims suitcase, denies knowledge of cocaine

MAGISTRATE Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday remanded, to prison, Dwayne Anthony Harry who faced a drug trafficking charge. The defendant (no address given) pleaded guilty to having, on August 29, at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, 6.9 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose.
He admitted that the suitcases in which the substance was found belongs to him but denied knowledge of the narcotic and the magistrate changed his plea to not guilty.
Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Oswald Massiah, who objected to bail for Harry, informed the Court that the prisoner is a St. Vincent national who was an outgoing passenger.
Massiah said the luggage was passing through the scanner when CANU officers saw strange objects inside and Harry, who was taken off the aircraft, claimed ownership.
The Prosecutor said the cocaine was discovered in two false bottoms of suitcases.
The magistrate transferred the case to Providence Court, also on East Bank Demerara, for September 7.
