THE police are investigating the murder of miner Sylvester Simon of St. Ignatius, Lethem, which occurred at about mid-day Sunday, at Apaika Landing, Middle Mazaruni. Initial investigations revealed that the victim was fatally stabbed during an argument with another man who has been arrested and is in police custody.
Two other persons are reported to have been injured during the incident, one of whom has been flown to Georgetown and has been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Permission must be granted to solicit funds along the roadways
The police have observed that persons are soliciting monies for various activities from members of the public along the roadways, and without the relevant permission.
The law is clear on this in that persons must first obtain written permission from the relevant authority before engaging in such activity, a police statement said last evening.
On Sunday, four youths were apprehended by the police after they were found soliciting funds from members of the public along Sheriff Street, Georgetown, without the relevant permission.
However, in view of their youthful age, they were warned by the police and sent away.
The police wish to remind members of the public that under the law, permission to conduct such activities is required beforehand.
Anyone found in breach of this legal requirement will be dealt with according to the law, the statement said.
