Panday impressed with efforts of young tennis players

THE sixth annual P&P Insurance Brokers lawn tennis camp concluded yesterday at the Pegasus Hotel tennis courts, where managing director and sponsor, Bishwa Panday, said he was impressed with the effort the young aspiring players showed during the three-week camp. Panday has been sponsoring the event for the past six years and according to him, this is a fair indication of their commitment to the sport.
“We are particularly pleased with the amount of young persons present and for that the parents must be commended. Lawn tennis is a very healthy outdoor sport that warrants widespread support and we are happy to be part of that support group,” stated Panday.
Panday, who is a former secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and also former president of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA), lauded the Christopher Ram-led Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) for the vibrancy they have shown in the administration of the sport.
He also took the time to acknowledge the effort of the parents who encouraged their children to participate in the camp. They came in for equal commendation, while he thanked the executives of the GLTA for running off another successful camp.
“We at P&P Insurance Brokers are indeed happy over the management of the camp and I wish to commend the GLTA, its executives and the two coaches Shelly Dailey-Ramdyal and Nicholas for making this sixth edition a success.”
The camp was initially set for a two-week period but was extended at the request of the executives to facilitate the huge turn-out, while the players had the chance to practically test their knowledge and skills of the game.
The event, which catered for youths aged 6-18, was held under the theme ‘Three weeks of fun’ and incorporated mini-tennis, drills, fitness, competition and friendly coaches during that time.
Sessions were held for 6-11-year-olds from 09:00 h to 11:00 h daily while the 12-18-year-olds will take to the courts from 11:00 h to 13:00 h, with Janesh Persaud, Vikash Panday, Desmond Caesar, John Nelson among others who were winners in their respective categories. They received trophies, while each received a certificate.
