SHAWN Younge, 41, was yesterday sentenced to two years imprisonment for obtaining money under false pretence.
He pleaded guilty before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, admitting that, on March 13, 2008, with intent to defraud, he obtained $15,000 from Orlando Harlequin, by falsely pretending that he was in a position to secure a Guyana passport, knowing it to be false.
The convict (no address given) said he went to the Passport Office with the virtual complainant but the place was closed and the latter gave him the money for him to do the transaction the following day.
Meantime, Younge said he received a call, telling him his mother was sick and he used the cash to travel to Linden and look after the woman.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said Harlequin trusted Younge with his money but investigators had a difficult time locating the prisoner, who was only apprehended last July 1.
