Windies crash to seven-wicket defeat as tempers flare

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – West Indies surrendered meekly to lose the third Test against South Africa before lunch on the fourth day but a verbal clash between fast bowler Kemar Roach and South Africa batsman Jacques Kallis threatened to overshadow the result yesterday.
Setting South Africa a paltry 47 for victory after being dismissed for 161 in their second innings, the visitors pulled off a seven-wicket win 25 minutes before lunch at Kensington Oval, to complete a 2-0 series victory.
South Africa, however, were forced to defy a torrid spell of fast bowling from Roach who bowled with pace and hostility to finish with three for 22. He sent back captain Graeme Smith (10), Alviro Petersen (6) and Hashim Amla (25) before the Proteas reached their target, and also rattled Kallis with a snorter of short ball that crashed into his helmet.
A fired-up Roach greeted Kallis with three successive short balls, the last of which struck the veteran right-hander a fearsome blow.
The incident sparked a war of words between Kallis and Roach and forced Shivnarine Chanderpaul to intervene to defuse the heated exchange.
Predictably, Roach served up yet another bouncer next ball which again triggered a confrontation between the two players. This time, umpires Simon Taufel and Steve Davis became involved as Roach, clearly incensed by something Kallis said, lost his temper and had to be restrained by his teammates.
The ugly incident sullied an otherwise tame morning where West Indies, resuming the day just 19 runs ahead at 134 for seven, added a mere 27 runs before they were bowled out.
Chanderpaul, unbeaten on 57 at the start, finished on 71 not out as fast bowler Morne Morkel (3-33) swiftly cleaned up the Windies tail by claiming all three wickets to fall.
The veteran left-hander played positively from the outset, pulling off-spinner Johan Botha (3-46) for a four and a six to mid-wicket in successive overs.
Sulieman Benn got into the act, slicing Morkel for four through point but he was bowled next delivery to put the final decline in motion at 151 for eight.
Roach got two fours in scoring eight before edging Morkel behind at 161 for nine and Brandon Bess stabbed the first ball he received to Kallis at second slip, to end the innings.
Chasing their small target, South Africa’s openers were troubled early by Roach’s pace. Smith, struck in the first over of the innings, managed 10 before pulling to Chanderpaul at mid-wicket at 14 for one.
His opening partner Petersen was then beaten for pace and bowled for six at 29 for two before Hashim Amla slashed to Benn at gully, after he had made 25 from 20 balls with three fours.
AB de Villiers drove the first ball he received to the square boundary to wrap up victory for South Africa.
