Counterfeit convict fined $60,000

AZIM Hassan, of Fyrish, Corentyne was yesterday fined $60,000 for being in possession of forged local currency notes.
He was convicted by Magistrate Omeyenna Hamilton, who imposed the monetary penalty and gave him two months to pay the fine, with the alternative of 12 months imprisonment.

Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting at New Amsterdam Court, also in Berbice, led evidence to prove that, on August 16, 2006, Hassan had counterfeit bills purporting to be eight genuine $1,000 and seven $100 notes, issued by the Bank of Guyana, knowing them to be forgeries.
Hassan, who plies his trade in Pitt Street, the main commercial area in New Amsterdam, was arrested following a report that he had tendered a bogus $1,000 bill at a Stanleytown liquor restaurant.
At Central Police Station, also in New Amsterdam, a search of his person yielded the other forgeries, the Court was told.
