New chair, deputy chair for Rights Commission

The Rights of the Child Commission (ROC) and the Commission on Women and Gender Equality have welcomed the new Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson subsequent to an election held on April 21, a press release from the Parliament Office stated. Aleema Nazir and Rosemary Benjamin-Noble were elected Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson respectively of the Rights of the Child Commission, while People’s Progressive Party Member of Parliament, Indranie Chandarpal, was elected Chairperson and Cheryl Sampson, Deputy Chairperson of the Women and Gender Equality Commission.
The elections were conducted by Speaker of the National Assembly, Ralph Ramkarran, who, in a briefing session, outlined the major functions of the Commission.
With regard to the Rights of the Child Commission, the functions include promoting and respecting the views of children and ensuring that all levels of Government and other public and private bodies institute policies that protect children from ills such as child labour and other forms of harassment.
The Commission will also be responsible for making recommendations on policies and practices of organisations which will result in the promotion of child rights.
Additionally, child rights issues will be redressed by the Commission and annual reports will be prepared and submitted on the Government’s behalf to the United Nations Committee on Rights of the Child.
The Commission on Women and Gender Equality consists of 16 members, chosen from various bodies including the Private Sector, Regional Affairs Committee, Women Affairs Bureau, and the Labour Movement.
The Speaker explained that their functions include recommending and implementing legislation and formulating policies that seek to enhance and protect the status of women.
The Commission is also required to initiate research and create suitable database on women and gender issues, particularly as it relates to reproductive health, domestic violence and socio-economic and political status.
Additionally, the Commission will promote consultation and co-operation with women organisations in relation to decision-making that will effect changes on the lives of women.
Further, the Commission is required to recommend training and assistance relevant to the improvement of women and girls, while at the same time facilitating women’s participation in decision-making. (GINA)
