Number 48 wins spelling contest among primary schools

In Berbice…
THE New Amsterdam, Berbice Branch of Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited, recently hosted a successful ‘Spelling B’ competition, in which pupils from the top primary schools in Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) participated.

The contest, in the Vryman’s Erven, New Amstedam boardroom of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), involved eight groups, from Number 48, Skeldon, Auchlyne, Cropper and Yakusari Corentyne primaries; Cumberland Primary, East Canje; All Saints Primary, New Amsterdam and Edinburgh Primary, East Bank Berbice.
The contestants were required to draw lots in order to compete against each other with the loser being knocked out.
The final was between Number 48 Primary and Cropper Primary, in a keenly contested affair for the winner’s prize of a trophy and cash.
Runner-up Cropper was also awarded a trophy and cash while each participant received folders, pencils and children’s wallets.
Speaking at the conclusion, Branch Manager Imran Saccoor congratulated the winners and others who took part and noted the high standards displayed.
He said the bank was very pleased to be associated with the activity that helped the children show off some of their potential.
Saccoor said it is part of the policy of giving back to the community from which the bank gets its support and there could be no better way of doing so that by supporting education.
He said ‘Right Start’ is one of the bank’s initiatives that caters for the young and their education.
“Our aim is to give you a right start in life as education is the key to success,” Saccoor remarked.
The event was coordinated by Quiz Master Ian Carter, a retired headmaster.
