THE remarkable gesture by President Bharrat Jagdeo in donating his Champion of the Earth prize money of US$ 40,000.00 has convincingly shown his genuine compassion and his commitment to the betterment of Guyana’s indigenous people. I was totally speechless when I heard the announcement. Imagine, after all the negative views supposedly emanating from some Amerindian communities against the Low Carbon Development Strategy, Mr. Jagdeo did what only a truly dedicated leader would do by donating that money.
This is commendable on the President’s part. No wonder he was the only leader from this hemisphere among an elite few who achieved such an esteemed award.
Recently, I was privileged to see some of the developments that have been taking place in Region Nine during the Rupununi Rodeo and I was impressed at the number of wells and solar panels that have been provided to those communities.
Now with the President’s donation I am sure that more communities would be able to enjoy some of these benefits.
