Mayor’s Cup football continues today with double-header at GFC

TWO intriguing encounters filled with intense rivalry are set to unfold at the GFC ground, Bourda, when play in the annual Mayor’s Cup Knockout competition gets under way today with a double-header.
Kick-off time is 20:00 h in the feature match which brings together Sunburst Camptown and Uprising, in an all-Georgetown affair.

From 18:00 h in the opening encounter Fruta Conquerors oppose New Amsterdam United.   With the four teams all in pursuit of emerging victorious towards advancing to the quarter finals, football fans and supporters can expect an evening of classical and entertaining displays.
Custodian Richie Richards performing duties between the uprights forms the last line of defence for Camptown.  Providing useful support are central defenders Leon Muir and Orlando Gilgeous. Supportive at midfield is Rishawn Sandiford.
Spearheading the attack are Nigel Codrington and Devon Forde, along with Troy Prescod who assumes the playmaker role. Responding for Uprising, a late replacement for Bakewell Buxton Stars, are: Omali Nassy, Terrence Lewis, Freeman Fordyce, Daniel Favourite, Winston Coleridge and custodian Keith Fraser.
Leading Conquerors’ challenge are Trevon Lythcott, Lester Peters, Lennox Charles and Gerald Gritten.Captain, Adrian Adams in addition to Delroy Ferdiand, Colin Bowry and Rondell Hazel who form the core of the Berbicians’ lineup.
DDL, Banks DIH, Digicel, Guyana Beverages Co. Ltd, Giftland, MACORP, Mohammed’s Enterprise, R.K’s Security Services, Keishar’s and A.H&L Kissoon are among the major sponsors.  Over $850 000 in cash incentives, along with trophies and individual prizes are up for grabs.
First-round action in the 16-team competition continues on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at the same venue with another double-header.
