Displaced Montrose fire victims need help to rebuild

The displaced victims of the Monday night Montrose Seawall Road, East Coast Demerara, fire yesterday appealed for assistance in rebuilding their house, which was razed.
Nine persons are homeless following the fire which reportedly started in a back apartment and destroyed the entire building.
Urmila Santura, 32, who was visiting her mother’s house located at 176 Montrose Seawall Road, told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that she was with her three children and mother watching television in the upper flat of the building when they heard a loud explosion.
She said they rushed from the building which was quickly engulfed in flames.
Santura managed to rescue her niece, Rachel Sanichara, six, who was asleep with her mother in the apartment on the lower flat of the building.
She said, “We had to break a window to free my sister-in-law and my niece who were unaware of the fire and were trapped inside.”
She added that the conflagration began at about 06:45 hrs, and within minutes their house was no more as they stood helplessly by and watched all their worldly possessions go up in smoke.
Santura told this newspaper the house was recently renovated and contained new household appliances and furniture.
Neighbours rushed to their assistance but the heat and the flames drove them back.
Presently the families are staying with relatives in different homes in the same village, until they can rebuild their house.
They said they cannot say how the fire started since there was no cooking in the home at that time and no household appliance was left unattended.
