Sarwan hits 116 in Guyana’s 452 all out

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, (CMC) – Ramnaresh Sarwan gave clear evidence that he was fully over his latest injury setback, when he completed his 31st first-class hundred to lead a strong Guyana batting performance against Windward Islands in the WICB regional first-class championship yesterday. The West Indies batting star top-scored with 116, as Guyana, sent in to bat, were dismissed for 452 in their first innings about half-hour after tea on the second day of their final match at Queen’s Park.

Sadly, the Windwards openers failed to emulate his durability, and the home team wobbled to 57 for two at the close.

Esuan Crandon had Tyrone Theophille caught behind for eight, and Davendra Bishoo had Miles Bascombe caught close to the wicket for five to set the Windwards back early.

Sarwan is appearing in his first match for the season, following a stiff back which he sustained during West Indies’ Test tour to Australia last December.

The Guyana captain was not out on 89 overnight, and duly completed his hundred in the morning session, when he guided fast bowler Nelon Pascal to third man for two.

Sarwan struck 14 fours from 224 balls in a little more than 5-1/2 hours, and reassured himself and the West Indies selectors that he should be ready for the five One-day Internationals against Zimbabwe, starting next Friday in his homeland.

Several other Guyana batsmen used the casual atmosphere of a match that holds no bearing on the outcome of the competition to post their best scores of the season.

Assad Fudadin – unbeaten overnight like Sarwan – scored 78 and added 180 for the fourth wicket with Sarwan.

Esuan Crandon was not out on 51, and Veerasammy Permaul made 47 in a 107-run, eighth wicket stand that broke the backs of the Windwards.

Royston Crandon also got 36 in easily Guyana’s most consistent batting performance this season.

Rawl Lewis was the pick of the Windwards’ bowlers with four wickets for 71 runs from 29 overs, Shane Shillingford captured three for 109 from 42 overs, and Pascal took two for 106 from 27.5 overs.

Fuddadin was caught behind off Delroy Johnson armed with the second new ball. The Guyanese left-hander hit nine fours from 244 balls in just over five hours.

But Guyana, resuming from their overnight total of 239 for three, reached 302 for four at lunch.

After the interval, Sarwan was caught at mid-wicket off Lewis, who also had Derwin Christian caught behind for 11.

Guyana then sunk to 344 for seven, when Pascal bowled Royston Crandon, but Permaul joined the elder Crandon brother, and they carried Guyana to 416 for seven at tea with a volley of strokes.

After the break, Permaul was caught behind off Lewis, who was on a hat-trick which he did not comple, after he trapped Bishoo lbw for a first-ball duck before Pascal brought the innings to a close, when he trapped Keon Joseph lbw for a duck.

Guyana are sixth on the seven-team table on 19 points – three more than bottom-placed Windwards.
