Police still on the hunt for suspect in van Beek shooting

CRIME CHIEF Mr. Seulall Persaud on Tuesday said that they are still hunting for a suspect in the shooting of Commissioner of Insurance, Mrs. Maria van Beek.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police said that although several persons were detained by the police for questioning and were later released, they are still looking for a particular man, who has managed to elude the police so far.

However, the police are continuing to work on the probable motive for the April 16, 2009 attack on the Clico Guyana Judicial Manager.

Mrs. van Beek was shot in the chest on Lombard Street, Georgetown, at about 08:15 hours, while on her way to work in slow traffic, by a lone gunman who managed to flee the scene.

Prior to the shooting she had reported to the court that Clico Guyana is insolvent as its liabilities exceed its asset by $11.9B.

Mrs. van Beek was hospitalised and shortly after her recovery she was granted leave and is said to be overseas and is expected to resume duties in 2010. (MICHEL OUTRIDGE)
