GPL assures of minimal New Year outages

GUYANA Power & Light (GPL) yesterday assured the public that there will be minimal outages for the New Year.

Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Shevion Sears-Murray told the Guyana Chronicle that generation capacity has been boosted by the new 20.7 megawatts Wartsila plant which was commissioned in Kingston, Georgetown, last December 4.

She said it adds to the previously installed 44 megawatts, making the total Wartsila supply in Demerara 64.7 megawatts.

According to her, all the engines are working and supplying current to the grid.

Sears-Murray said the holiday season demand has been as expected and will continue into 2010.

She said the only incident of power failure was reported in Lamaha Springs last Sunday, when a fuse attached to a transformer had to be replaced but there was no generation shortfall for Christmas.
