Another fire destroyed store, Household Plus, re-opens

HOUSEHOLD Plus, the store that was destroyed by fire at Lot 113 Regent Road, Bourda, Georgetown, last October 17, has reopened for business.

Household Plus Store owner, Nasser Hamid, yesterday at his store.

With the motto ‘Providing Goods and Services Beyond’, the owner, Nasser Hamid yesterday told reporters it feels good “to be back on my feet, again.”

He said the cost of rebuilding amounted to $20M but he is still awaiting word from his insurance company, through the broker.

Hamid said his original building was insured for $50M.

He is now introducing newer merchandise, such as high end furniture and rugs and will soon have other things, like cellular phones.

Hamid said, because the rebuilt structure is a little smaller, by five feet in width, as a result of compliance with the City Building Code, he was able reopen quickly.

For this week only, patrons will benefit from special discounts on prices, he offered.

Hamid said he is also grateful to a commercial bank and for the support from the rest of the business community, through credit.

Last October 17, a blaze razed four Regent Street stores, including his, following another, on October 9, in Regent Street, too, that caused the destruction of three buildings and severely damaged another.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, on December 4, announced the findings of the investigations into both.

It said the last resulted from incendiary devices being thrown into Household Plus but there was insufficient evidence to arrive at the cause of the other.

However, the Ministry said the compilations, by Guyana Fire Service (GFS) have been submitted to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for further investigations.

Another of the businesses affected by one of the fires, Wireless Connections, was also back in business from last week.
