TE/Banks DIH Grass Track C’ship next stop is Port Mourant

FOLLOWING a successful inaugural grass track meeting at the Hampton Court ground in Essequibo last month, the directors and organising team of Titan Entertainment (TE) in collaboration with beverage giant, Banks DIH Limited, now have their sights on their next stop, Port Mourant, for the second meeting.

“We are looking at giving the Berbicians a better show than what the Essequibians had. Not to say the competition was not great in Essequibo, but that was our first meeting and we looked back at it with a microscopic view and from that we know what needs to be done as we revive the sport of grass track cycling here in Guyana.”

Those were the words of director of TE, Peter Willems, prior to the organising committee meeting with the competitors last Wednesday night, with regard to the upcoming meet.

“We were looking at bringing a Suriname contingent to add some international flavour to the meet, but the date is not convenient to them. However, we are looking at having them compete in the next meet which is scheduled for the Ogle Community Centre on the January 24, 2010.

“We want to create a relationship with Suriname, where our champion rider at the end of our 12 events, will go and compete in an event that may be organised by TE in collaboration with our Surinamese counterparts, but come Sunday December 20, the Titan Entertainment grass track meet will be at the Port Mourant Community Centre ground,” said Willems.

He stated, “We are looking at going global around the Caribbean with this sport which is mainly a North American sport and the response we received from Essequibo was heartening and after running off our events, our next aim would be to take it live to the grass track loving people of the Caribbean who only get to see it via television.”

Chief Entertainment Officer (CEO) of TE, Bobby Duguid, told Chronicle Sport that he was surprised at the response given to the inaugural meet by the people of Essequibo.

“First of all, I want to say thanks from the depths of my heart to the people of Essequibo. They threw their support behind us, especially the business community, even though riders in the calibre of Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’ Vieira and Vassy Barry were not able to make the meet.

However, I must say that both riders have given us 100% commitment towards the upcoming meet at Port Mourant, hence Berbicians can expect a treat for their money from the competitors, especially Vieira who is brimming with confidence despite starting at a disadvantage with regard to the points standing,” said Duguid.

At the end of the first meet in Essequibo, Andrew Rajkarran leads the professional category with 32 points, followed closely by Charles Henry on 28 and Andrew Wong a distance third on 14, but both Vieira and Vassy will be looking to bridge those gaps next Sunday, making the category more competitive.

In the Novices division, 15-year-old Junior Da Silva who is the reigning Novices champion fittingly leads that division with 32 points, eight more than the experienced Vickash Rajkumar while Andrew’s younger brother Raj Rajkarran is third on 11 points.

As was the scenario in Essequibo, 12 races consisting of five professionals, four novices, two choppy and one feature race will be contested at Port Mourant and certainly if everything goes according to the organisers’ plans and wishes and comparing Essequibo’s showing by the competitors, a heated battle is anticipated by the spectators.
