Teacher fined, bonded for indecently assaulting, threatening student

THE 33-year-old teacher, who was at the centre of a Charlestown Secondary School sex scandal in June 2008, was yesterday fined and bonded.

Gopaul Ramatulla, of Lot 165 Middle Road, La Penitence, faced charges of indecent assault and using threatening language before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.

He was put on a bond to keep the peace for two years and ordered to pay a $15,000 fine on the indecent assault charge and one for $5,000 for the threat.

It was alleged that on June 3, 2008, Ramatulla indecently assaulted one of his students, 13-years-old and threatened her.

He was first remanded to prison before being granted $60,000 bail, on June 11, by Magistrate Oneidge Walrond-Allicock.

Police Corporal Sherwin Matthews, prosecuting, said the defendant fondled the girl’s breasts and, after doing so, warned her that, if she told anyone else, he would damage her.

The Prosecutor also said Ramatulla had done similarly to several other female students at the school.

However, Defence Counsel Nigel Hughes said Ramatulla has been teaching for more than 12 years and was a dedicated member of the President’s Youth Award Scheme, where he taught at least 250 persons.

The lawyer said Ramatulla was suspended from teaching at the school and there had been no more reports his using violence.
